George Clarke revives Art & Crafts building style

As part of a project for UK primetime show ‘George Clarke’s Old House New Home’, Formica® Laminate was used to help transform their Arts & Crafts mansion.

The new series sees celebrity architect George Clarke getting under the skins of UK homes, helping homeowners who are seeking to transform their period property by scoping out their potential and then creating new, stylish and modern solutions fit for modern life.

Homeowner Gill and her partner Paul had a vision of their dream home and what it would look like. They wanted to transform their home in Moseley, Birmingham (UK), previously owned by Gill’s father.

Arts & Crafts houses traditionally showcase an informal but cultured style and were often designed with a large open floor plan, using materials such as stone, brick and wood. Natural light typically filled the rooms.

The house is located in a suburb which was developed in the late Victorian period. The area was once distinctive for its Arts & Crafts houses however these homes gradually fell out of fashion. Economic decline during the mid-20th Century meant that affluent entrepreneurs made way for property developers and these houses were turned into large apartments.

Previously, the property had been transformed into nine separate flats. Gill was looking to convert the space back to a two-storey Arts & Crafts home that integrated some additional modern features. This British style has come back into fashion after years in the design wilderness. However, this distinctive style is now finding a new audience.

The project was not without its challenges, but Gill and Paul were able to overcome these with plenty of inventiveness and George’s expert opinion.

To help realise their Arts and Crafts vision in the en-suite bathroom, they chose Formica Plex™ in Diamond Black for the sliding doors on the base of the sink to create a contemporary and sleek finish. Complemented by a marble top and black floor tiling, it helped to tie together a chic and timeless look.

Gill stated ‘I am very pleased with the outcome of our en-suite bathroom. The Diamond Black Formica Plex ties in nicely with the marble basin top and will look the same in years to come.’
