deVOL has again proven that great design doesn’t require a grand space. This cheerful and compact Shaker kitchen sits in a charmingly wonky 17th-century mews house in Bermondsey, South London – a real home, full of character, warmth, and everyday functionality.

This joyful space feels refreshingly unpolished, with its sunny, easygoing atmosphere and lived-in charm. A real home filled with real things, this kitchen is a celebration of thoughtful design that feels humble, relaxed and entirely achievable. It’s a reminder that kitchen design doesn’t have to be about expansive square footage or high-spec minimalism – instead, it’s about creating a place you want to return to every day.

Designed and fitted with the help of deVOL, this small but cleverly planned space makes full use of every inch. The kitchen balances function with beauty, featuring smart kitchen storage, integrated under-counter appliances, pull-out bins, a classic fluted sink, and a generous Lacanche range cooker. An old wooden table and chairs sit proudly in the space, because shared cooking and relaxed moments matter more than formality for the couple who live here.

The room’s wonky structure was no obstacle. deVOL’s bespoke kitchen service allowed the couple to combine standard and custom elements from the Shaker collection. Each cupboard is made to order in Leicestershire, ensuring a precise and tailored fit for every unusual angle or awkward space.

Two bespoke paint colours were created for this project—a vibrant green on the cabinetry and a soft baby blue for the open shelves—a pairing lifted further by original pistachio-green sash windows. Aged copper worktops bring richness and texture, while classic brass taps and Boho-style handles complete the look, staying true to the house’s eclectic design.

This kitchen may be compact, but it’s brimming with personality. The design demonstrates deVOL’s core philosophy: to make timeless, beautifully crafted furniture that fits the lives of real people in real homes.
