deVol delivers a scullery for modern times, inspired by the past

Kitchen furniture specialist deVOL has completed a striking new scullery project in the basement of a country house in Surrey, blending the functionality of traditional service rooms with a contemporary sensibility.

The design takes inspiration from Victorian and Georgian sculleries, where every element was chosen for a purpose. Here, those same values are reinterpreted for modern living. A reclaimed chequerboard floor sets the tone with durability and heritage appeal. Open shelving keeps essentials close at hand, while simple cupboards painted in a creamy, buttery yellow — one of today’s most in-demand shades — bring warmth and character to the scheme.

Walls and floors have been fully tiled, a nod to the practical solutions of the past. Once used purely for resilience and ease of cleaning, these surfaces are now admired for their simple, unfussy beauty. The result is a space that is as easy to maintain as it is inviting.

Restraint is at the heart of this project. There are no unnecessary flourishes, only a confident simplicity that allows craftsmanship, proportion and utility to shine. The effect is a room that feels timeless, authentic and designed to last.

For deVOL, this scullery reflects a wider philosophy. More than thirty years ago, the company revived Georgian and Victorian furniture for contemporary homes. Today, it is extending that same approach to domestic architecture, celebrating the honesty and elegance of “below stairs” spaces.

By reimagining the scullery for a modern household, deVOL has demonstrated that utilitarian design — when executed with care and attention — can be both highly functional and effortlessly stylish.
