Howdens Trade Emissions

Howdens emission reduction targets approved by Science based targets initiative

Trade kitchen supplier Howdens has had its near- and Net Zero company-wide emission reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

As the first major UK trade kitchen company to be approved by the SBTi, the certification provides an independent validation to the company’s strategy to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030*. Howdens has also committed to reducing scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030*. By 2027, the company has pledged to source all its energy requirements from renewable sources.

As part of Howdens commitments, the company will also actively engage and support its suppliers in having their own science-based targets, with a target of 25% signed up to SBTi by 2027.

By 2050, Howdens has committed to reach Net Zero across its value chain.

Each of Howdens targets has been deemed to be in line with the current climate science in limiting global warming to 1.5oC above pre-industrial levels.

Claire Toomey, Sustainability Lead at Howdens, says: “Securing SBTi’s endorsement for our emissions reduction targets validates our plans to reach Net Zero by 2050.

“This accreditation underscores our dedication to ensuring we take a proactive stance in mitigating climate change. It not only reinforces our responsibility but also recognises that achieving sustainable practices in the kitchen industry necessitates collective action. We are steadfast in our determination to contribute to this cause, advocating for greener solutions and minimising our impact on the environment.”

Howdens first launched its sustainability strategy in 2021 and continues to drive forward on its commitment to the sustainability agenda within the company and supply chain. Howdens is also a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Network which promotes the development of a circular economy.

An independent global body, SBTi enables businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. SBTi works in partnership with CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF).
