Food waste action week

InSinkErator backs Food Waste Action Week

InSinkErator®, the inventor and manufacturer of food waste disposers, once again supports Food Waste Action Week from the 6th to 13th March 2022.

Devised by Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), Food Waste Action Week focuses on the message: ‘Wasting Food Feeds Climate Change’. The campaign aims to unite consumers and businesses to raise awareness of the devastating impact that food waste has on our planet.  A UK family wastes, on average, at least eight meals a week, which is responsible for over 25 million tonnes of CO2 a year1.

InSinkErator® is supporting this year’s Food Waste Action Week with a host of social media activities, as well as teaming up with Instagram food blogger Meliz Cooks. Meliz is inspired by her Turkish-Cypriot heritage and is passionate about cutting back on food waste and saving it from going to landfill. Meliz has shared one of her delicious recipes, Firinda Kizartma. Passionate about ‘repurposing everything’ while using up leftovers, or freezing them to use another time, Meliz says: “Using what we have in our fridge before buying anything else often requires a real change in mindset if it’s not something that has been intrinsically embedded in us. Often, it’s because it can be challenging to find the inspiration to cook something when staring at a random concoction of ingredients in the fridge; usually, I find that this random concoction of things will pretty much always involve vegetables.”

Meliz’s inspiring recipe is a great example of using a variety of vegetables, including wrinkly tomatoes that are not fresh enough to use in the next salad but too good to throw away. The recipe is available here.

Anne Kaarlela, Marketing Communications and Customer Service Manager, Europe and Russia, InSinkErator® says: “It is incredible that 70 per cent of the food that is wasted in the UK comes from consumers in their own homes, which equates to 4.5 million tonnes of edible food that could have been eaten rather than being thrown away every year2

“We are passionate about encouraging everyone to use their leftovers, however we also appreciate that there is inedible waste with many of the meals we cook at home.”

An InSinkErator® food waste disposer manages edible food waste in the home responsibly. Fitting neatly under the sink, it is a safe and practical solution, grinding food waste into minute particles, thanks to the innovative system of stainless steel grinding rings. The food waste is then dispatched down the drain.

Anne adds: “We wholeheartedly support Food Waste Action Week and encourage everyone to make essential lifestyle changes to protect the future of our planet. The impact of our behaviour and the influence it has on the wider environment needs to be recognised and importantly that ‘Wasting Food Feeds Climate Change’. It is our mission to continue to educate consumers and to offer sustainable solutions to reduce the amount of food waste ending up in landfill.

“Make sure to follow the campaign hashtag #FoodWasteActionWeek for hints, tips and recipe ideas, as well as InSinkErator® social media channels too.”
