Kitchens Review Retro Flooring Trends

The retro flooring trends making a comeback

What’s old is new again when it comes to interior trends, and our flooring choices are no exception, according to Alex Heslop, Trend Expert at Flooring Superstore. Whether it’s a touch of the art deco or maximalist medieval interiors, here are the interior trends impacting our flooring choices in 2025.

Closed concept living

“We’re seeing a growing movement of people seeking defined spaces in their homes, also known as broken-plan, in stark contrast to the open-plan living trend we’ve seen dominate for so long. One way to achieve this is by creating defined zones, either through partitions or by creating spaces without having to build walls, which can be achieved through floor zoning.

“While matching flooring can create a cohesive look throughout the home, incorporating different floor designs in an open plan space can subtly define different areas for cooking, dining, working and relaxing – adding character and functionality to any home.

“To achieve this, consider contrasting materials that will clearly differentiate between different zones of the house – for example, tiles in high traffic areas more prone to spills such as the kitchen while wood or wood effect can create a calm and relaxing ambience in living and dining areas in the same open plan space.”

Art Deco

“Art Deco interiors pay homage to the decorative style that dominated in the 1920s and 30s and is characterised by luxurious materials, bold colours and bold geometric shapes. We’re seeing more people incorporating a touch of this glamorous trend into their interiors, possibly going hand in hand for the growth in popularity for personalised interiors, which showcase more personality.

“And there’s no better way to add a touch of the art deco from the ground up than with your flooring. An effective way to achieve the art deco style is the addition of timeless monochrome flooring, and this works particularly well in smaller spaces such as hallways and bathrooms.”

Medieval interiors

“Incorporating a dose of old-world charm into your décor and blending traditional finishes into modern day homes is gaining popularity.

“Stone, hardwood or traditional tile floors are a natural choice when it comes to embracing this trend, often in a dark finish or rich coloured pattern. Nothing quite embraces this trend like dark hardwood flooring and Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) look and feel like the real thing, offering added the durability that makes it suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.

“LVT has come a long way in both style and functionality in recent years and with added waterproof and scratch proof properties, it’s a durable choice for both contemporary and classic interiors.”
