Global tariff disruption is reinforcing the value of the independent specialist channel, according to the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA), as rising import costs and supply chain volatility expose the limitations of big-box and online retail models.
The association, which represents independent kitchen, bathroom and bedroom specialists across the UK, says its members are better placed than volume retailers to adapt to current market pressures.
“Consumers and trade clients alike are learning that price and convenience aren’t the whole story,” said KBSA National Chair Richard Hibbert.
Structural advantage
The KBSA argues that tariff-driven cost increases are placing strain on import-heavy, high-volume retail models, while independents benefit from closer supplier relationships and greater flexibility.
Volume retailers, it says, are more exposed to supply disruption and pricing pressure, while specialists can often redesign projects around availability issues before they impact customers.
“Expertise, accountability and trusted supplier relationships matter enormously when markets are unpredictable,” Hibbert added.
On the ground impact
KBSA Vice Chair and Coalville Kitchens owner Luke Wedgbury said members are already adapting to longer lead times and intermittent product availability.
“We’re seeing increased lead times and occasional shortages, but because we work closely with suppliers, we’re able to plan ahead and redesign where needed without disrupting projects,” he said.
Differentiation opportunity
KBSA is encouraging members to more actively communicate their sourcing knowledge and supplier insight as a commercial advantage.
“There’s a tendency to undersell the expertise behind every project,” Hibbert said. “That knowledge has real value, particularly in the current climate.”
Accountability factor
The association also highlights its Code of Practice as a key differentiator, offering structured standards across design, supply and installation, alongside a formal route for resolution—protections not typically available through online or volume retail channels.
