Private equity firm 4D Capital Partners LLP has acquired a majority shareholding in Lancashire-based furniture manufacturer J&J Ormerod plc (JJO).
4D, which specialises in UK-headquartered manufacturing businesses, said its investment reflects JJO’s strong market reputation and established customer relationships. The company confirmed there would be no disruption to operations following the change of ownership.
Under the new ownership JJO remains focused on ensuring that its top-quality products and services are delivered to customers without interruption and to the usual high standards. In the long term, the business strategy continues to be centred on growth and improving the operational side of the business.
As part of the deal, Matthew Scoffield has been appointed executive chairman, while Anthony Robinson becomes chief financial officer. Both bring experience in operational improvement and business expansion within the manufacturing sector. JJO’s long-standing managing director, Stephen Greenhalgh, will remain with the business during a transition period and continue as a director and significant shareholder. No other senior leadership changes are planned.
“We are very excited about 4D’s investment in JJO. said Greenhalgh. “4D’s investment, hands-on experience and manufacturing knowledge will help the business in its long-standing strategy of growth and operational performance improvement, as evidenced by the many innovations and operational developments JJO has implemented over its 157-year history.”
The Bacup-based company employs nearly 300 people across its 1.2 million square foot site, with more than half of the workforce serving for over a decade. It works with a network of independent retailers across the UK.
Founded more than 150 years ago, JJO is recognised for its ongoing investment in plant, machinery, and infrastructure. In recent years it has placed greater emphasis on sustainability, implementing energy efficiency measures and waste reduction initiatives. In 2024, it launched a carbon calculator in partnership with The Carbon Trust, designed to provide cradle-to-grave data on its kitchen products and give consumers and retailers greater visibility of project carbon footprints.
