waste reduction inisnkerator European Week

European week for waste reduction

InSinkErator® champions the aims and objectives of the European Week for Waste Reduction initiative and is challenging households to make positive lifestyle changes to reduce their food and plastic waste for the future of the world we live in.

The initiative, which takes place from 16th to 24th November 2019, looks to raise awareness of waste management solutions across Europe, encouraging both private enterprises and the general public to get involved. The focus for the 2019 initiative is to educate both adults and children on waste facts and figures, while communicating ways to change their behaviour1.

According to InSinkErator® addressing the issue of increased food and plastic waste across Europe is important for the company who says it aims to educate as many consumers as possible about its alternative and sustainable solutions.

In 2017 it was recorded that EU countries were wasting approximately 88 million tonnes of food every year and if drastic changes aren’t implemented, this figure is expected to rise to 126 million tonnes by 20202.

InSinkErator® is an active campaigner in encouraging the disposal of food waste sustainably, and advises composting wherever possible. Where this option is not possible however, an InSinkErator® food waste disposer is the ideal alternative for diverting food waste from ending up in landfill. Furthermore, with less food waste in landfill, the household’s carbon footprint and the associated greenhouse gases are also reduced.

Of the 35.8 million plastic bottles that are used every day in the UK, 16 million of them are not recycled3. The non-recycled bottles, therefore, end up in landfill or in the ocean, affecting the sea-life and the environment. With a variety of re-fillable drinking bottles widely available, consumers should look for alternatives to buying endless amounts of bottled water.

Designed to meet the increased consumption of filtered drinking water, the InSinkErator® 4N1 Touch tap provides a stream of filtered cold water for 30 seconds, at the touch of a button. Consumers with a 4N1 Touch can therefore benefit by having instant filtered water readily available in their own home, reducing the need to purchase bottled, filtered water.

Anne Kaarlela, Marketing Communications Manager, Europe and Russia InSinkErator®, says: “Educating consumers on the impact that both food and plastic waste has on the environment is really important to us at InSinkErator®. We will continue to manufacture products that can be easily installed into consumers’ homes that can effectively work towards reducing the astonishing waste statistics.

“At InSinkErator®, we will be promoting the European Week for Waste Reduction initiative by sharing hints and tips on our social media channels, as well as sharing where consumers can win a Good Housekeeping approved M 66 food waste disposer for their own home.”
