Inglis Hall creates coastal Scottish retreat kitchen for Edinburgh couple
Sometimes, stepping away from familiar surroundings sparks extraordinary creativity. For Tibi and David Weir, a journey north from Lewes led them 500 miles to the rugged Scottish coast, where the pristine surf and windswept cliffs inspired a bold architectural vision.
Renton Hall, an imposing but neglected residence, became the canvas for their project: a contemporary home that would harmonise with its dramatic surroundings while respecting the original architecture. Integral to the design was a bespoke kitchen by Inglis Hall.
Tibi, the founder of artisanal jam business Dodger, and David, former director of the renowned Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh, brought a combination of erudition, creativity, and exacting standards to the project. Despite the logistical challenge—over 1,000 miles from the Inglis Hall workshop – project management, Zoom calls, and meticulous site visits ensured every detail met their exacting expectations.

The resulting kitchen is a warm, family-friendly space, designed for everyday living and entertaining. Its subtle palette and natural materials echo the muted tundra tones of the surrounding shore and sea, blending seamlessly with the remodelled house. Nothing is extravagant; every element serves a purpose, reflecting a philosophy of restrained elegance.
The Weirs’ home and kitchen stand as a testament to thoughtful design, intelligent craftsmanship, and the enduring appeal of contemporary Scottish architecture. It’s a space where form meets function, and where a family can enjoy life at one of Britain’s most dramatic coastal settings.
